SA company extends fire safety system contract for Collins fleet

South Australian fire safety company Wormald has secured a $5 million contract to continue delivering advanced fire suppression and safety systems to the Collins Class submarine fleet.

Awarded by Australia’s submarine builder and sustainer ASC, the six-year contract extends Wormald’s support of the Collins fleet to over 40 years, reinforcing its long-standing role in protecting one of the Royal Australian Navy’s most strategically important assets.

ASC Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Stuart Whiley welcomed the new contract as a continuation of a trusted partnership that strengthens Australia’s submarine capability.

“The Collins Class submarines remain one of Australia’s most potent and strategically important defence assets that will continue to safeguard our sovereignty well into the future,” Stuart said.

“Long-standing suppliers like Wormald play a vital role in that mission, delivering advanced fire safety systems that keep the men and women in the Royal Australian Navy, and our boats, safe.”

As a founding partner in the Australian Submarine Corporation (ASC), Wormald’s involvement in the Collins class program began in 1985-86, after receiving its first contract with ASC during the design and build phase.

While Wormald is no longer directly involved within ASC, the company continues to support ASC and the Collins class submarine fleet with cutting-edge fire protection and life safety systems.

Wormald Australia Director – Defence & Marine Jon Buckley was pleased to continue the company’s decades-long contribution to the program.

“It is a privilege to continue our 40-year long-standing support role with ASC to deliver mission-critical fire protection, life safety engineering systems, and asset protection solutions for the Collins Class submarines,” Jon said.

“Wormald takes great pride in being part of ASC’s highly-skilled and dedicated supply chain, contributing to the protection of those who serve and ensuring one of Australia’s most important defence assets continues to operate at peak performance whenever and wherever it is required.”
